Alvaro Siza_Galician Museum of Art 1964

demonstrated a growing sensitivity in Siza’s handling of space and light...existing overall geometry, but designed a detached building that completes and extends the original plan...
Like all of Siza’s buildings, the treatment of the exterior is characterized by restraint and impassiveness...

Siza’s architecture resembles an ever-growing body of research, in which discoveries are gradually unearthed and elements crystallized...
In summer, the green slope and steps are colonized by students, as informal extensions of the building...

Inside, Circulation becomes a social event, as students throng through the tall gallery space...
The building is essentially nougat of different sized volumes, sensitively reconciled to explore the potential for both grand gesture and human intimacy...
Light is reflected off predominantly hard or lustrous surfaces, giving the interior a cool luminosity. Materials such as white stucco, granite, and polished timber are chosen for their simplicity, climatic comfort and general robustness (crucial in a building that will endure heavy daily use)...

In their exploration of light, texture, movement and space, Siza’s buildings touch the senses in many ways. Diverse sources of inspiration are brought together in an abstract, imaginative unity with its own hierarchy and language. Yet Siza’s approach is not simply based on set of recurrent forms or characteristics, but a way of seeing, thinking and feeling about many things: building, climate, history, institutional ideals and patterns of use...

Development in ideas...

Narrative :
has been developed in studio discussion and needed to be more specific with the spatial characteristic in brief. So it has been changed like this...
"The warmth of the morning sunlight creates expectation for a woman waiting for her lover at their secret location."

Interpretation :
Woman is waiting her lover in their secretly hidden meeting spot. The space traped by the site confines her as well and does not allow her to go out to find him. So she has to wait and wait...She stares out the window to see his coming. Her expectation grows bigger while watching his way to the room.

Model :
Two contrast concepts will be focused on the model. To show enclosed space contrast to the opened outside & cold feelings of inside space and how the warmth of sunlight could create different mood for the room.
Related to the narrative, model will have bed room for two lovers with widely opened entrance to greet her partner. It will be located partly into the slope of the hills to emphasize the trapped situation for woman and will keep the privacy for them. Window will represent her big eye that can search him and it brings the morning sunlight into the room which changes the mood by its warmth for the cold concrete room. Pathway down to the entrance would be more like tunnel and will be created complicatedly to increase tension. It is long, dark and narrow way to the room and its difficulty and taking long time would increase expection for both couples before meeting each other. However, the light still works positively in this space as well to lead the way out from this dark space.

inspiration for SITE

Rokko Housing One 1983
Rokko Kobe,Japan
Architect: Tadao Ando
Urban, Hillside.Cliff-like massing appropriate to steeply sloping site.

The site for the project . . .

Dong back (camelia) island in Busan, Korea

I have chosen this place because i wanted to have a place where the sun rises from the east and there is a hill with beach in front. Placing the model partly into the hill could hide the space and keep the privacy for the couple. This is also similar to the woman's trapped situation and in contrast to that infinitely opened outside emphasizes her endless waiting.

DRAFT model

IDEA for the MODEL ...
Two contrast spaces will be created to show the rhythmical changes of enclosed space to open space by considering the different amount of light coming in to the rooms. In this model, light will also be a method to show the spatial connectivity between different spaces.

One may be the space which is enclosed and light only comes from the window placed on east side of the building. It is a place for a woman to hide from the outside world but she may chose to glimpse from that window.

For the pathway to the entrance, i prefer to be complexed and show rhythmical changes of the light going dark to bright in somehow to represent woman's state of mind.
In contrast to that the entrance will have wide opennnigs.

CONCEPTUAL DRAFT MODEL

DRAFT narrative

narrative:
The morning sunlight shining into the east manor wears away woman's timidity of first day out since her heart was broken.

interpretation text:
The woman in the painting is holding clothes on her hand gazing at the outside of the window and she seem to have some expectation for outside. However, undressed state shows her hesitation with this decision. Absent of the partner in the painting adds lonely mood for the space. Since her partnet left she trapped herself in this big cold room alone. She wokes up in the morning and sun rised from the east brings light into the room warms up her body. By this her determination to go out and starting new life becomes clear and have assurance about it.

Expression on her face and her action is showing two very different emotions going on at same time which inspired me with the narrative. Contrast between coldness of the room and warmth from the light also motivated my idea towards to have two different features harmonized by the effect of the light.

Project 2 : Room and Narrative

Edward Hopper Morning in a city 1944 oil painting

about the painting...

"Hopper's painting also address the issue of perception. They include the viewer's eye, despite the fact that the figures appear entirely self-absorbed and unconscious of being observed. Hopper suggests that the figures we see do not realize they are seen.At the same time, they perceive things that remain hidden to us, beyond our field of view."
"Apparently awakened by the sun, they gaze musingly out the window as if wondering whether this might be the first day in a new life. Hopper's women are vurnerable, marked by dissapointment, in need of protection. Yet they still seem to harbor hopes and expectations."

phenomenal qualities: some key words...

delicate ideality confusion determination hesitation preparation
