about NEWTOWN
History
19th century_
established as a residential and farming area in the early 19th century
named after grocery store 'new town stores'
early 20th century_
the area became increasingly run down as wealthy Sydneysiders preferred to settle in newer and more prestigious areas
In 1949, Newtown was incorporated into the City of Sydney
mid 20th century_
originally a relatively prosperous suburb (Victorian Mansions)
Newtown was a low-income blue collar suburb, often denigrated as a slum
becoming home to a sizeable migrant community
Sydney University / mecca for young people
late 20th century & early 21st century_
Many homes have been restored and represent an example of nineteenth century architecture in Sydney
Northern end > South for rent price
